  1. Get 5 pieces Rohu Fish
  2. Get 1 tsp. lime juice
  3. Prepare 1 onion, chopped
  4. Get 1 tomato, chopped

  6. Prepare 1 tbsp. mustard seeds
  7. Get 2 green chillies
  8. Take 4 tbsp. mustard oil
  9. Get 1 tsp. panch phoron

  12. Take 1 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped
  13. Prepare 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
  14. Make ready 1 tsp. ghee
  15. Get 1/2 tsp. chilli powder
  16. Get 1/2 tsp. cumin powder
  17. Make ready to taste salt

Garnish it with coriander leaves before serving. This is my attempt to show how to make Odia Macha Besara or Orissa Style Fish in Mustard Gravy/Curry. This recipe goes really well with steamed rice and this is how traditionally it has been. I always want to try out traditional Oriya recipes as they are my most fav dishes. and since I belong to Puri, I always want to bring that flavor into my kitchen and home.

Steps to make Macha Besara:
  1. Marinate the fish with a pinch of salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder, lime juice and 1 tsp. mustard oil for 10 minutes.
  2. Grind the mustard seeds along with the green chilies, garlic and tomatoes to a paste. Keep aside.
  3. Heat remaining oil in a pan and shallow fry the fish pieces till light brown on both sides. Drain and keep aside.
  4. Temper the same oil with panch phoron, whole dry red chilies and bay leaves.
  5. Saute for a few seconds and then add the onion. Fry till light brown.
  6. Add the ground paste, chilli powder, cumin powder and turmeric powder. Saute till oil leaves the sides of the pan.
  7. Add 1 & 1/2 cups water and bring it to a boil. Add salt, green chilies and the fried fish pieces. Simmer on low flame till the gravy is slightly thick.
  8. Add coriander leaves and ghee. Switch off the flame and transfer to a serving dish.
  9. Serve hot with steamed rice.
