  1. Make ready 6 cup idli rice
  2. Make ready 2 cup roasted gram (pottukadalai)
  3. Prepare 10 red chillies
  4. Get 20 curry leaves
  5. Take 6-8 garlic pods
  6. Make ready 2 tbsp butter
  7. Take 3 tsp sesame seeds black
  8. Prepare 3 tsp ajwain seeds
  9. Prepare 2-3 pinch Asafoetida
  10. Take Salt as required
  11. Take Oil to deep fry

This scrumptious Indian snack, also known as Chakli, is popular for its crunchy texture and buttery flavor. First, gather your ingredients and tools. Murukku: Murukku is a Tamil word that has more than one meaning. Murukku for a common man is a snack taken in between lunch and dinner in the evening.

Steps to make Muruku:
  1. Soak idli rice for atleast 5 hours. Drain water and grind it in a wet grinder with very little water.
  2. While it’s grinding, grind red chilly, curry leaves and garlic with water in a blender/mixie. Add this paste also to the wet grinder to grind along with rice. The batter should be thick as well as soft. We can add water later if required.
  3. Powder the roasted gram using mixie/blender and sieve it. Add this to the batter along with salt, ajwain seeds, sesame seeds, asafoetida and butter. Mix well. The dough should be non sticky. If it’s not spicy as expected we can add red chilly powder.
  4. Heat a pan with oil on high heat.
  5. Fill muruku press with the dough. Grease backside of stainless steel lid or laddle with oil and press the dough in round shape. Drop it in oil. Flip and fry both the sides until it becomes crispy. Maintain high heat throughout the process.
  6. It’s ready 😋

Thenkuzhal murukku will be the main diwali snack in our households. My mom as well as MIL both make this in large numbers and store in large tins. It is very flavourful and crisp.
